Yes, Internet companies and pornographic websites themselves must have a duty of care and a sense of responsibility when it comes to age restrictions on their content, but is essentially 'banning' free porn really the way to go about this?
This is yet again, the return of the Nanny state; of course children are important and in a society where their innocence is being taken away at a very speedy rate, these restrictions should be better enforced. Why, however, should the wider adult population be given the responsibility for something that has nothing to do with a lot of us? Being a parent. There's a rising number of people who decide not to have children, so why should their day to day, personal and private decisions have anything to do with the children of other people? Furthermore, why should the private decisions of responsible parents who have age restrictions on their children's technology have anything to do with the government?
Parents are far too quick to accuse other people, companies, the Internet and so on, of everything and anything, but this matter comes down to parenting. If you don't want your child stumbling onto pornographic websites when they're using their iPad or iPhone then it's up to the parent to put an age restricting block on the technology used by their children. Back in the 90s and early 00s, it seems that parents were extra vigilant with Internet restrictions and on top of that, any over 18 website would have a brief age related questionnaire which was certainly enough to put many children off proceeding back in the day. Some of those websites were free, some you had to pay for, but the warning was enough to cause such a feeling of guilt and danger that the website was often ditched as a poor attempt to venture into an unknown, explicit world which we certainly wouldn't have been ready for. The world of Internet porn has massively blown up since the 90s which is why these restrictions are so important. The option of log in details is a much better restriction and deterrent for young prying eyes, than the option of taking away free porn from the masses. Masturbation is a healthy habit which should never be discouraged and along with a decent sex education, free pornography can fit happily into a functioning society (whether people want to admit this or not - most of you will be looking at explicit content on a regular basis.)
As a childless - by choice - adult, with a niece and nephew under the age of 5, I genuinely think it's the responsibility of parents to ensure that these children we care about so passionately, don't see inappropriate content. If they ever did happen to stumble across anything in the future and there wasn't any restrictions set up by their family, the blame should fall upon the parent, not the adult website.
David Cameron's government certainly aren't lovers of porn, after the banning of various acts in British porn last year - despite the 250,000 attempts to access pornography from inside parliament last year! Closet w*nkers?
