A student from Harvard University pretended bombs had been placed around campus in order to get out of taking his exams, US officials have claimed.

The institution was forced to evacuate four campuses earlier this week following emails which stated explosives had been placed around the university.

Eldo Kim, 20, is accused of emailing hoax messages to the university with "Bombs placed around campus" as the subject line in order to get out of taking his exams, according to federal prosecutors.

Final exams were cancelled at the Cambridge, Massachusetts institution as students and staff were evacuated from a dormitory, classroom buildings and the science centre. A notice was posted on the emergency section of the institution's website ordering Science Center, Thayer, Sever, and Emerson to be evacuated, while the university's Twitter account issued alerts.

The emails were sent to the president of the student newspaper, harvard police and university officials, according to a criminal complaint filed by the US attorney. According to the message, shrapnel bombs were to be detonated in two buildings, including one where Kim was reportedly due to take an exam.

“Shrapnel bombs placed in science center, sever hall, emerson hall, thayer hall, 2/4. guess correctly. be quick for they will go off soon," Boston CBS reported.
